OPERA 101

You don’t need to be an opera expert to enjoy a performance at the COC—but if you’d like to learn more about this unique art form, here are answers to some frequently asked questions from our patrons.

HOW WILL I KNOW WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE OPERA?
Even if you don’t know the language an opera is being sung in, you’ll be able to follow along thanks to a COC innovation: SURTITLES™, which are a simultaneous translation projected above the stage.

The opera’s production page will also have a synopsis, if you’d like to know the full story before you attend the performance.
DO I NEED TO DRESS UP?
There is no dress code at the Four Seasons Centre! Our audience members enjoy opera in everything from formal attire to jeans. We advise dressing for comfort and flair—we want you to have a wonderful time, and also enjoy the opera as a special occasion.

In consideration of patrons with allergies, we do ask that you kindly refrain from wearing scented products and fragrances. Masks are strongly recommended but not required.
WHEN SHOULD I ARRIVE?
The venue’s main doors typically open one hour prior to showtime.

Late seating cannot be guaranteed, so we encourage patrons to arrive early to relax and enjoy the venue’s amenities. The Four Seasons Centre features stunning views of the city as well as an in-house collection of art installations. Concessions are also typically open before the performance.
IS OPERA ONLY SUITABLE FOR ADULTS?
It depends on the opera! Please feel free to chat with a Ticket Services Representative to learn more about a particular production. You can also consult a production’s webpage for story details and content advisories—simply head to our Season Calendar and tap ‘LEARN MORE’ for the opera you’re interested in.

Youth under 15 and patrons under 30 are eligible for specially priced tickets.

The COC also often presents a dedicated run of Opera for Young Audiences performances, which are tailored for young patrons.
HOW LONG IS A TYPICAL OPERA?
Operas vary widely in their runtimes, from about 90 minutes all the way up to an epic six hours. Performances that run over 90 minutes typically have an intermission.

If you’re interested in a particular opera’s runtime, check its dedicated production page, which will include an approximate duration. Simply head to our Season Calendar and tap ‘LEARN MORE’ for the opera you’re interested in.
HOW CAN I LEARN MORE ABOUT THE OPERA I’M SEEING?
A good place to start is its production page, where you’ll find a plot synopsis, production information, and any additional materials we’ve created to enrich your experience of the opera.

Simply head to our Season Calendar and tap ‘LEARN MORE’ for the opera you’re interested in.
WHY DO SOME PEOPLE CHEER BRAVO/BRAVA/BRAVI?
When an audience member really enjoys a performance, they might let the artists know by standing and cheering "bravo" (for male singers), "brava" (for female singers), or "bravi" (for a group of singers, the orchestra, or as a gender-neutral option).
WHAT DOES "TOI TOI TOI" MEAN?
Similar to “break a leg,” the phrase “toi toi toi” is said to wish an artist good luck before a performance, especially on opening night.
